Bunny Rogers: Ladder Down

What captured you immediately was the girl’s trembling singing tone that fills the mini theatre. It is like you mistakenly entering an intimate theatre but felt bad about leaving because of the environment: little girls unconfidently and carefully singing to an empty house and you might be the only audience.

Bunny Rogers’ solo exhibition was an unconscious tour featured in connected two rooms at the Whitney Museum. The center piece, animated video A Very Special Holiday Performance in Columbine Auditorium, set the tone for the show. Half real avatar’s singing “Memory” from the musical Cats.  The theatrical setting effectively evoked the audience’ emotional connection while the visual present may be confusing and rather unclear as walking into the second room. It was like entering a Freudian childhood collection. Ladders, mobs, chairs in candy colors, resting in the grey “box”.

Tthe show was simple and grey.  Little girl’s voice filled the room and one is emotionally connected while rationally unsure and allienated. The kitsh like 3D effect videos, contrasts the empathy that it evoked, extracting the part that lies in every human being, you and me, allienation, trauma, teenage memory.
